Hand Painted Patriotic Sign for the Porch

Decorating painted decor for the holidays rocks.  This hand painted patriotic sign for the porch was made from a big scrap piece of wood that has been in the garage for longer than forever.  DecoArt Patio Paints work GREAT on wood and last in the outdoors!  It’s amazing the coverage with just ONE coat.  Get an ENTIRE SET of the paints on Amazon!  The painted patriotic sign is a combination of some favorite patriotic colors and flowers.  I mostly love the flower that looks like a flag!

Supplies Needed for Hand Painted Patriotic Sign

To make the painted patriotic sign you will need the following supplies and materials.

Directions for Hand Painted Patriotic Sign

Paint the flowers one step at a time.

Keep a bunch of brushes handy and keep using new ones for new colors then wash them all at the end.

Once the flowers are painted, add a blue background because it will help the flowers really pop.  Mix the lighter of the two blues with a white as going along to get this sky look.

When the blue is dry, add long and short white stems.

After that, immediately add green to the white stems.

Next, let the paint dry.  Bend solder wire to create a hanger and glue it to the wood.  Tie a ribbon on for extra fun to the painted patriotic sign.

Why Painting with Kids is a Good Idea

This is a great project to do with kiddos. Painting with kids is so much more than a craft project or simple activity. It is a way for kids (of all ages really) do many very important things.  Here are some fabulous reasons to get kids painting.

  1. It helps them convey ideas and share.
  2. Painting gives kids an opportunity to express emotions — even ones that might be hiding deep inside.
  3. It uses several senses to paint and through that kids make connections.
  4. Exploring color, the process and the outcomes teaches cause and effect.
  5. When kids made handmade masterpieces, it boosts confidence.

Preparation Steps for Painting with Kids

One of the biggest factors in creating successful paint crafts with kids lies in the prep. Here are four things you can do to prepare for a great time crafting.

  1. Expect a little mess. Prep your area knowing that paint can spill, drip and splatter. Cover your work are with kraft paper before starting.
  2. Provide aprons for the kids. If you don’t want to but them, they can wear old adult sized shirts as aprons.
  3. Have paper towels nearby and ready if needed.
  4. Know the dry time of the project before starting.  If there are several steps, there might be a dry time involved. Have a puzzle or activity on hand to do during that in between time. You can grab free ones here on the blog.

Do you love the painted patriotic sign?  It could be made in so many sizes. If you enjoy painting, especially patriotic, you might also love to paint these darling rocks!  You can get the details on what paint I used and how I created them here on the bloggity blog.
