DIY Lummi Sticks

These DIY Lummi sticks are so easy to make and part of a fabulous tradition.  Lummi sticks are instruments that are named after the Lummi Native American people.  They are cylindrical sticks, usually roughly 7 inches long and 0.75 inches in diameter.  They are often used to teach children about rhythm as a first method of making music but also a long standing tradition in scouting.  I had a set that I made when I was a Brownie.  We performed at the mall once as a whole troop and it was my first time on stage.  We made them with our troop and they not only loved the craft but the finished masterpieces as well.

I had the hardware store cut the pieces for me then I sanded them for the girls.  They painted them with Apple Barrel acrylic paints then I coated them with Outdoor Mod Podge.

It’s always so amazing to see how unique each girl is when they paint and craft.

I sewed a bag with Kunin Group Felt for each of the girls to store their sticks.  They decorated them with Sizzix die-cuts and they came out darling.  I LOVE these two!

They also added their signature using our troop stamp from Expressionery on fabric then stitched to their bags.

The troop has made up darling routines with their lummi sticks.  It makes my heart so happy.  There are lots of other great scouting ideas as a part of the Craft Lightning Scouting Series.   While we had our basket of Modge Podge out, the girls opted to make new journals for the upcoming year too.  You can find out all about these HERE.
