Girl Scout Character Bags with Rainbow Flowers

I am so excited that this year I am one of the three leaders for ZoZo’s Junior Girl Scout troop.  I created these bags to use to kick of the year at our first meeting and am happy to share that the girls LOVE them and what they stand for.  Here’s the deal.  Ten year olds are learning about being responsible for their belongings, their calendars and their relationships.  This bag has elements to it that support all of these things.  I sewed them with curtain liner fabric for the outsides and good high quality felt (from Kunin Group) for the insides.  I added a little pocket to the front of each bag which we will use at a later time.

I provided each girl with 7 felt flowers that I cut out with a die that I designed for Sizzix.

I also gave them a corresponding color chart.  As a troop, we discussed the colors and what they could stand for then each girl got their set of flowers attached to the handle of their bag as a reminder of these things.  You can get the free printable of the color chart HERE.

We used Tulip fabric markers to sign each other’s bags on the back as a reminder that together we make up a troop, a family and a team.

The best part is that the bag will work as a place for the girls to keep their Girl Scout stuff organized.  There is a pocket on each side and the felt one in the middle.  One is for their vest.

One is for their folder filled with a calendar and notes.

The third is a place for them to keep the other things that get handed out at meetings and events (ie: badges, patches, etc.)

Here are a few of our “leader” plans for the bags.  I am sure we will be dreaming up more as the year goes on!

  • We are going to teach the girls to stitch with embroidery floss later this fall and let them decorate their handles.
  • We plan to give each girl a felt heart from each leader stitched to a ribbon that can be taken in and out of the front pocket…reminding them that we always love them and that they always have our “hearts”.
  • We plan to add SWAPS to the front…from each other as  form of relationship building.

Stay tuned!  I will share more as soon as we add on and grow.

Cheers to all things Girl Scouts,

Laura
