Kid Painting Crafts with Twine
Kid painting crafts are such a great way to create home decor and handmade gifts. This project makes use of a handmade stamp that is assembled with twine and old box. It is so fun to make stamps for painting because every one creates a unique look. My favorite twine comes from Hemptique.
Material Needed for Kid Painting Crafts with Twine
- Twine (I recommend the twine from Hemptique.
- DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paints (Greens, Yellow, Orange, Black)
- Cardboard (I think recycling a cereal box is a fabulous idea.)
- Tape
- Paintbrush
Preparation Steps for Painting with Kids
One of the biggest factors in creating successful paint crafts with kids lies in the prep. Here are four things you can do to prepare for a great time crafting.
- Expect a little mess. Prep your area knowing that paint can spill, drip and splatter. Cover your work are with kraft paper before starting.
- Provide aprons for the kids. If you don’t want to but them, they can wear old adult sized shirts as aprons.
- Have paper towels nearby and ready if needed.
- Know the dry time of the project before starting. If there are several steps, there might be a dry time involved. Have a puzzle or activity on hand to do during that in between time. You can grab free ones here on the blog.
Directions to Paint Chicks in the Grass
First, create your twine stamp. Wrap twine around a box and either tape it in place or tie a knot. The purpose of using a box is to give it some height so kids can hold it. Other options include a block, jar or even jello box.
Next, cut circles out of the cardboard and use tape to stick them to the paper.
Put green paints on a paper plate. I think the clear ones are fun for kids to see the mixing better. It is okay to add a little cream or white too.
Third, dip the stamp in the paints over and over and press onto the paper, over the tops of the taped on cardboard pieces.
Let dry! Then remove the cardboard pieces.
Lastly, paint chicks with the other colors (using a paintbrush).
Why Painting with Kids is a Good Idea
Painting with kids is so much more than a craft project or simple activity. It is a way for kids (of all ages really) do many very important things. Here are some fabulous reasons to get kids painting.
- It helps them convey ideas and share.
- Painting gives kids an opportunity to express emotions — even ones that might be hiding deep inside.
- It uses several senses to paint and through that kids make connections.
- Exploring color, the process and the outcomes teaches cause and effect.
- When kids made handmade masterpieces, it boosts confidence.
