Mixed Media Burlap Valentine’s Day Garland

Add I am pretty excited about this project.  I tried something totally new to me and mixed things up making this mixed media burlap Valentine;s Day garland.  I wasn’t sure how the beautiful colors of DecoArt’s Americana paint would work painted straight on hearts cut from burlap but WOW, it is super awesome.  The finished project is hanging from our mantle going into the magical month of love, February.  This post is sponsored by DecoArt but the ideas and opinions are my own.

I made it in the Girl Scout Trefoil shape too.

To get started, you will need the following supplies and materials:

The first step is to cut out the number of hearts you want in your final garland.  Keep in mind the size you would like in this step too.  I created some heart patterns for those of you who prefer to use a pattern over freehand cutting.

Once the hearts are cut out and ready, paint them with red and pink Americana paints.

Use different kinds of brushes to add depth.  I used a round sponge brush to add white to these red hearts.

Let them dry completely then add a thick coat of Decou-Page to them.  This will make them sturdy and if you use gloss, shiny.  If you are adding paper or ribbon scraps, now is the time to add them too.  It helps to put a little tacky glue under them to hold them in place during this part of the process.

Once they are dry, punch holes in the tops of the two sides of the heart and string them together with twine or ribbon.  I love the simplicity of the twine.  This is a good time to add other embellishments too.

I love them in a garland but also as stand alone ornament decorations.  I hand stamped a metal piece to add to this one in making a Valentine for my love.  We will probably leave it up all year round somewhere in our home.

This is a great project for Girl Scouts to do too.  I tried it on a Girl Scout trefoil and it came out fantastic.  If you need a pattern for the Trefoil, you can grab it and print it with this printable.

I am going to give this one to my co-leader for Valentine’s Day because I know she will flip.

I love that this project could be done with any shape.  The combination of the burlap, Americana paint and Decou-Page creates a high quality project that is great for gift giving.  I am guessing my troop will be making this during the 2018 holidays for our craft fair in winter shapes.

Cheers to LOVE (and to all things Girl Scouts too),

Laura
