I am officially celebrating my love of #allthingswatermelon this Friday and wrapping the work week up sharing these two ceramic pieces that I JUST got out of the kiln a few hours ago. One never knows what will happen in that super hot, magic HOT wonder called a kiln. Ceramics is certainly a ‘REVEAL’ art. I painted these slice of watermelon ceramics a couple of nights ago, glazed them and fired them while I was sleeping. I used all products from Duncan Ceramics. Truth really is … #iheartduncan
The painting is the super funnest part for me. I have been looking at these ‘pizza’ pieces on my shelf for a while and suddenly it hit me that they might really be watermelon slices. I got up out of bed (for real), got it all ready and then painted in the morning. I decided to paint a jar too so I could have a matching piece. Right now it is full of watermelon-ade but I am pretty sure it will end up on my work table full of paintbrushes very soon.
I LOVE them both. But this jar…oh this bright cheery jar!!!
Here are a few of my painting tips to get this look.
- Paint the rind all once with a light green then let it dry. Add the darker green stripes.
- Use a light pink for the inside rind and a darker pink for the fruit. I did a couple of coats of both but like to leave it a little streaky, like watercolor sort of.
- I added dark pink dots to the fruit by dipping a brush end in the paint and placing it on the piece.
- The seeds were created with French Dimensions
The cookies…well they are Milanos with frosting and decorations. I didn’t bake today…yet! I still might.
Happy National Watermelon Month!
Cheers,
Laura
PS: I jumped back into this post because the jar did indeed end up filled with my favorite brushes!
PPS: This piece is pretty fun for pizza too!
My favorite piece! I love the version I did for Pi Day, but I think I like the watermelon even more!
