5 Facts About Hedwig

Before we get started making this adorable owl craft, let’s learn a little about the owl Hedwig. Here are five of my favorite facts about Harry’s pet in the Harry Potter series.

  1. Hedwig was Harry’s first birthday gift. Hagrid bought Hedwig and gave him to Harry. While the Dursleys gave Harry awful gifts (including a toothpick), Hedwig was the first thoughtful and beautiful birthday gift Harry ever received.
  2. While the Hedwig in the movies appears consistent, there are actually several owls who performed the role of. The primary and most highly trained owl who performed in most scenes was called Gizmo.
  3. Hedwig is a female snowy owl. In the movies, the owls chosen to play the role were all male. This is because males are smaller and easier to interact with the child actors.
  4. Hedwig is a bit of a snobby owl and isn’t fond of Harry’s best friend Ron’s owl, Pidwigeon – a younger and immature owl.
  5. Hedwig was named after Saint Hedwig Of Andechs, the patron saint of orphans.

Materials and Supplies

STEP ONE

To create the front and the back of the Hedwig, line up six jumbo craft sticks on your work surface. Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to width and attach with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP TWO

Measure a jumbo craft stick into two 2 1/2” sections and then cut with scissors. Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to width and attach with a glue gun and glue sticks. This will become a mini Hogwarts letter.

STEP THREE

Basecoat the front and sides of Hedwig and the letter with white acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary.

STEP FOUR

Dry brush ivory acrylic craft paint along the edges of the mini letter to give a distressed appearance.

STEP FIVE

Download, print, and cut out the Hedwig patterns. Trace the two pieces of the wax seal onto red craft felt with a permanent marker. Cut out pattern pieces with scissors.

Layer the three felt pieces on top of each other, securing with a glue gun and glue sticks. Glue the red felt wax seal to the mini letter.

STEP SIX

Trace or pin the Wing patterns to white felt, the eyes to yellow felt, the beak and talons to black felt. Cut out all patterns with scissors.

STEP SEVEN

Glue the yellow eye piece, two wiggle eyes, and beak to create Hedwig’s face. Attach the talons at the bottom with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP EIGHT

Draw half circle feathers onto Hedwig’s body and tips of the wings using a black permanent marker. Refer to photo for placement.

STEP NINE

Flip over Hedwig and attach the wings to the right and left sides with a glue gun and glue sticks.

To finish, glue the mini Hogwarts letter onto Hedwig’s talons.

Create this Dollar Store Craft Stick Hedwig the Owl with the kiddos to not only promote learning skills, but also to spark conversations about the Harry Potter novels and movies.

It is so cute and fun. It would be fun to use the same pattern and create different colored owls to make an entire owlery. Did you know that owlery isn’t attached to Hogwarts and is actually a bit of a walk for students to get to from their castle home.
