Create adorable Harry Potter sorting hat cupcakes for you next magical party or experience to sort your guests into Hogwarts houses!

Upon arriving to Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a first year student, you get sorted into a house. This house is like your family while you are at school. I am a proud Hufflepuff!

Before we get started, it is important to know a little about each house.

Gryffindor: Scarlet and Gold House Colors! Mascot Lion.  Values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry.

Ravenclaw: Blue and Bronze House Colors! Mascot Eagle. Values intelligence, creativity, learning.

Slytherin: Green and Silver House Colors! Mascot Snake.  Values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness.

Hufflepuff: Yellow and Black House Colors! Mascot Badger. Values hard work, patience, justice, and loyalty.

Ingredients for Cupcakes and Frosting Decorations

The ingredients for this are basically the standard cupcake making items.

For the cupcakes

  • 12 T unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ c sugar
  • 4 T oil
  • 3 t vanilla
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 ¼ c milk
  • 2 ½ c flour
  • 2 ½ t baking powder
  • ½ t salt

For the decoration

  • -4 c powdered sugar
  • 1 c unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1 t salt
  • 2 T milk
  • Mini M&Ms – sorted into blue, yellow, red and green
  • Chocolate fondant, to decorate

Directions to Make and Bake Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Line your cupcake tin(s) with liners and set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the softened butter and sugar.  Cream until smooth.

Add in the egg, vanilla, oil and mix well.

Add in the milk and mix to combine.  Mixture will appear curdled – this is normal.

Add in the flour, baking powder and salt.  Mix well – stopping the machine, scraping down the sides and mixing again.

Pour about ¼ c of batter into each cupcake liner – they sould be about ⅔ full.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 14-16 minutes or until golden brown and the center is set.  Allow to cool completely before decorating.

Frosting and Decorating

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the softened butter, about half of the powdered sugar, vanilla and salt.  Mix well on low speed.

Add the remaining powdered sugar and milk.  Mix to combine.  Scrape down the sides and mix again.  Bump up the speed to medium and whip the frosting until fluffing looking – about 1 minute.

Transfer the frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip.

Sort out the M&M candies into yellow, blue, red and green.

Sculp the sorting hats out of fondant.  Fondant is much more pliable when warm.  Use the warmth from your hands and knead the fondant for a few minutes.  Pinch off a piece about 1 inch in size (the size of a ping pong ball) and roll into a ball.  Shape into a cone with a flat bottom and a pointed top.  Pinch the bottom into the brim of the hat and point the end of the hat to the side with a little twist.  Use a toothpick to draw the face – slanted angry eyes and a frown.

You can get as detailed as you’d like here – the best part about fondant is that if you don’t like the face, you can redo it again and again!  We also like to wear gloves for this step to prevent fingerprints as well as add a bit of texture to the fondant but this is just a suggestion.

Once the cupcakes are cool, use a teaspoon or apple corer to create a hole in the center of each cupcake.

Fill each hole with a single color of M&M’s – red, yellow, green and blue.

Pipe a large mound of frosting on top of each cupcake to conceal the colored M&M’s.

Place your sculpted fondant sorting hat on top of each frosted cupcake.

Storage:  Cupcakes can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
