National Craft Month for Kids

March is National Craft Month which just might make it the most creative month of the year.  Of course if you are a maker like me, all of the months are the most creative ones.  National Craft Month started in 1994 when the Craft and Hobby Association (Now known as the Association for Creative Industries).  It was created to help people rediscover and learn about the many awesome benefits of crafting.  I am so thrilled to be teaming up with my friends at ooly to share some great stuff and a giveaway too!

What Happens During National Craft Month

During National Craft Month, makers, crafters and creatives get super busy with their supplies and tools.  Artists, artisans and craftspeople of all kinds come together to celebrate creativity and shine a light on this amazing industry.  There are SO many different kinds of crafting.  Here are some of the crafts you can do with kids using some of my favorite supplies from ooly.

How Can You Participate in National Craft Month

There are TONS of ways to participate.  Here is a list of some of my suggestions.

  • Make something. Anything. Grab supplies and craft.
  • Visit crafty blogs and leave comments on the ones you like.  Support your crafty peeps.
  • Take a class.  Learn a new crafty skill.
  • Create handmade items for a cause.  Your local shelter might need some puppy blankets.
  • Get social and craft as a group.  Have friends over to make things together.
  • Shop at your LOCAL craft store and support our brick and mortar partners.
  • Share your creations with #NationalCraftMonth on social media.
  • Download these FREE printables and get to coloring!

Why Should Kids Craft

  • Crafting helps kids learn to problem solve.
  • Creating art develops fine motor skills.
  • Making with the hands encourages independence.
  • Creativity and imagination are reinforced through crafting.
  • It helps kids learn about patience.
  • Crafting supports the learning to be able to focus.

What Supplies Are Best for Kid Crafts

This is a great question!  The best supplies are the ones that work easily and do their jobs.  ooly makes products that are proven to do what they say they will do.  The vibrant markers produce bright colors.  The watercolor paint pods create cheerful colors.  The pens, crayons, oil pastels, etc. all do what they are supposed to do!  This is why they are a true favorite.

  1. I love mixed media but that has led me wanting to try everything. Paint pouring, acrylic painting, watercolors, card making…

  2. I love making Homecoming Mums when that time of the year rolls around. I also like to do birthday decorations because I can never find what I am looking for at Party stores! All my kids have inherited my love of crafting as well!

  3. I love coloring, cutting, pasting, and creating with my kindergarten class! I wish school was back in session! I miss creating with my kiddos!

  4. I love painting and anything mixed media. I enjoy so many types of arts and crafts, so I find mixed media allows me to experiment with all of them.

  5. I like to do collage. I make books for the blind and to make graphics tactile I use a variety of materials for textures. It’s so much fun to see maps and graphs turn into things you can feel instead of see.

  6. I love all needle arts. I pick up partially done embroidery projects at my local thrift store and finish them for pillows or wall hangings. That is my favorite and so satisfying when done. I like to draw in the evenings because it is just so relaxing.

  7. I love all crafting honestly. Dont have a favorite. Me and my daughters color, knit, paint, scrap books, cards and so much more.
