The Walters-Kelly family is getting pretty excited as the night of the “50th Annual County Music Awards” draws close.  Are you planning to watch on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 8/7c on ABC?  We sure are because we are huge country fans around here and have big hopes for some of our faves this year!  My passion for country music goes back to early childhood.  My dad played the guitar and sang songs in the evening out on our front porch with his friend, Steelers football star Ray Mansfield.  Mr. Mansfield’s daughter, Caroline, and I would spend this time admiring our dads and singing out loud with them.  I think I knew every word to Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” before I could read.  Through the years with Kenny Rogers (and John Denver and Willie Nelson) on repeat, I learned about the value of spending time with those I love and bonding through music.  It was a magical part of childhood that I was lucky enough to bring along into my adult and parenting life.  We still love the originals but around here you will usually find us playing, cooking, doing homework and making things to the tunes of Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley and Lori McKenna.  This year we are planning to celebrate in style.  After all, it is the FIFTIETH year of the awards and that is EXCITING!  I have put together a celebration station and some of my favorite Kentucky girl southern recipes for you using lots of my favorite things from World Market!

There will be dozens of performances, one-of-a-kind collaborations, and countless special moments during the awards!  Setting up a party for such an evening is a blast.  It all started with this…my chalkboard cubby!  I love the farmhouse decor from World Market best!   I added lyrics from one of my favorite songs!  It creates the perfect place for cups, napkins and plates.

You can’t go wrong with anything that is made using biscuits when it comes to southern country snacks.  They look delicious don’t you think!

Deviled eggs are another southern country specialty.  These eggs are so easy to make and a sure hit.  The secret is in the pickles!  Be sure to use Hengstenberg Barrel Pickles to get the perfect taste to your egg delights.  Serving treats for a country music gathering works great on these galvanized metal stands.  They come in three sizes which worked great for this!

Pretzels and homemade beer cheese is a southern tradition.  Often times we serve it with celery too!

Beer Cheese

Listening to country music goes hand in hand with festive beer drinking AND whiskey!  This Kentucky whiskey is perfect in one of my favorite cocktails…the whisky root beer float!  It is simply a mix of one part Lexington Bourbon Whiskey (my college town) to three parts Boylan Root Beer with cherries on top.

Redneck Float Ingredients

Seriously, if you want to celebrate country music is classy redneck style, make this drink for your friends!  They will love it!

They will love it even more if you serve it in a jar!

These boots belong to my oldest of four children.  They were his first pair of cowboy boots from his loving Uncle Stephen.  He wore them with complete pride as he learned to rope hay barrel cattle in our yard.

Dylan Boots

Here is a great throwback picture of him (or two)  that I love on a day he was wearing those boots.  He was four.  He is now twenty.  As a rebellious teenager, his senior quote was, “My name is Dylan Kelly and I hate country music.”  Everyone knew it was a huge joke because he loves it!

The guitar started out as Dylan’s but is now a family instrument.  Our true guitarist is Zoe (the youngest) who takes lessons and plays in a band.  She has performed Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood for talent shows and band performances.  She it totally amazing!  I made the banner with the Kraft Triangle Flag Banner set.

Serving ice cold beer is a “must do” for country fans.  This metal tub is the perfect solution to keeping your refrigerator door from opening and closing all evening.  I like to serve a mix of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks because, well because we have kiddos!

This video makes me all kinds of happy!  Growing up in Pennsylvania, we spent lots of time camping in the mountains of West Virginia.  This compilation of singers sharing the classic John Denver song is like magic to the ears.  Before you watch it, be prepared to watch it over and over again!  Country roads…take me home!!!
