Create a darling interactive chalkboard table runner for your next party activity.
There is something magical about a party table that is bright, cheery and interactive for kids. This table runner is the perfect way to create the opportunity for kids to settle in and access their imagination while visiting with friends around the party table. Of course it would be great for everyday snack times, meals and after school treats too! Non digital play
Materials and Supplies Needed
The only things you will need to make this a super successful activity come from Imagination Starters. They offer an amazing variety of chalkboard surfaces like placemats and activity pages but this table runner is by far my favorite. I am a fan of a blank canvas – the larger the better so that makes sense, right? Here’s what you need!
- Chalkboard Crayons from Imagination Starters
- Chalkboard Table Runner from Imagination Starters
- Wipes or Wet Paper Towels
The chalkboard crayons are dustless and non-toxic. I love them because they create vibrant colors on the cleanable chalkboard runner surface. When I was a classroom teacher, I LOVED decorating my chalkboard with all the fun colors but it was always a giant mess of dust. For that reason, I have a deep appreciation for these crayons and surfaces.
Directions
Roll the runner out on your table and cut to length. If desired, use a little tape to secure in place. For each place setting, draw two clouds with enough space between them for a plate. This creates a starter for kids to fill in with a rainbow (or whatever they want)!
Place the crayons on the table – scattered about so the kids all have access to all of the colors. Set the table with the basics – plates, napkins, etc. – to decorate for the party. These items can be removed when the kids sit down to eat.
While they are creating, offer words of affirmation and encouragement. Here are some of my favorite things to say to kids during creative art play.
- Tell me about that beautiful drawing.
- Your artwork is really inspiring.
- I love your combination of colors.
- What other kids of art do you like to do?
Use the decorated table runner as the backdrop for your party meal or cake time!
Another great option would be to use the wonderful chalkboard placemats. These would also make great party favors to then send home with a pack of the chalkboard crayons. Beth from Creatively Beth wrote all about these over on her blog.
Lindsay used the chalkboard planner in a really creative and fun way. You can get all of the details about that over on Artsy Fartsy Mama!
