DIY Keychain with Buttons and Trim
Creating a little fashion for your keys is always a good idea. Consider this. Your keys go with you everywhere you go. So, they deserve to go in style, right? My mom used to tell me to spend my money on the items that I use every single day. She was so wise. I whipped this adorable keychain using some of my favorite buttons and just a few other supplies. I love this idea for a party craft or a project that kids could make for Mother’s Day gifts. This DIY keychain could be done in any color scheme so would be awesome for school or team spirit.
Materials and Supplies Needed
- Buttons (My favorite are from Button Jam!)
- Felt
- Embroidery Floss
- Needle
- Scissors
- Ribbon (1 inch wide – grosgrain) or Ric-Rac Trim
- Key Fob Hardware Set
Directions
To get started, decide how long you want your loop to be. Do you want it to fit over your wrist? Do you want it to be long enough to hang somewhere. If you are like me, you probably “lose” your keys a lot so the bigger the keychain, the better. Cut your felt a little wider than your ribbon but the same length. This tutorial shows the project with a ten inch length.
Step One
Select your buttons and make sure they are all going to fit on the length of ribbon you have chosen. You can do one side or both. Sew the first one, leaving 3/4 inch at the bottom for the clamp. There are lots of fun ways to sew on buttons so feel free to be creative here while making your DIY keychain.
Add the rest of your buttons, being sure to sew them on with multiple stitches so they will be durable.
Step Two
Loop your ribbon/ric rac trim over the felt. Use a pair of plyers to squish the clamp closed, securing all of the 4 layers tightly together.
Step Three
Add the metal key ring through the clamp then put your keys on!
