Giant Oly*Fun Yard Ghosts

These giant Oly*Fun yard ghosts are a fantastic addition to Halloween decorations!  They are easy to create and add such an element of festivity to your yard for the spookiest and most magical season of them all.  I don’t know about you but our neighborhood goes all out when it comes to adding flair to the season.  From lights and blow up things to door wreaths and yard signs, you will find it on my street.  I am super excited because nobody will have ghosts like these this year.  Well I guess if someone in my hood follows this project tutorial there might be a duplicate ghost pair nearby.  This post is sponsored by Fairfield World, the makers of Oly*Fun but the ideas and opinions are my own.

To get started you will need the following materials and supplies.

  • 3 Yards White Oly*Fun for Ghosts
  • 1/4 Yard Red Oly*Fun for Boots and Lips
  • 1/4 Yard Black Oly*Fun for Eyes and Shoes
  • Scraps of Brown Oly*Fun for Legs and Mustache
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine

Fold your 3 yards of white Oly*Fun in half lengthwise and cut around the top fold on the two sides to create rounded corners.  I used a super large lid to a pan but you can find anything round or eyeball the cuts.  This will create the outline of a ghost.

To separate your two ghosts you will need to cut down one side of the Oly*Fun where the fold is in the yardage.  Next cut out 4 sets of black eyes (approximately 2″ circles).  I double up with Oly*Fun so actually cut out eight eyes.  Cut boots from the red (doubled so really 4) and shoes from the black (doubled here too).  Cut legs and mustache from the brown (doubled).  Make them whatever size you want them to be.

Fun Fact:  I used the heart die that I designed for Sizzix to create my girl ghost’s lips.

Sew your double sets of everything together to make single components.  You should end up with 2 boots, two shoes sewn to legs, 4 eyes, a mustache and lips.

Pin the pieces into place on the ghosts ensuring that you are only pinning through the TOP of the two layers.  Each ghost has a fold across the top.

Sew the pieces in place starting with the eyes, mouth and mustache.  These get sewn to only the top layer.  When it is time to sew the legs and the boots to the ghosts, pin them and then sew ALL THE WAY across the bottoms of the ghosts.  This creates ghosts that are folded on the top and sewn across the bottom which will help when you are putting them outdoors.

Put your ghosts on a tree branch or string them through the folds over ribbon to decorate your yard.  Ta da!

Oly*Fun is lightweight so it will blow in the wind.  It is not made for long-term outdoor use.  You can buy it at your local craft store.  I usually get mine at JoAnn Fabrics.

Cheers to Halloween decor that is easy and darling.

XO,

Laura
