Grab the pattern for this groundhog day kid craft and use it with felt or paper!
Groundhog Day is a fun time to talk about how we feel when it comes to springtime versus winter. It is a great time to craft and process feelings about the changing of the seasons and how it affects us all differently. Personally, I LOVE springtime but I really like winter a lot too. This groundhog day kid craft is fun for all ages but easy enough for kids and beginners.
Materials and Supplies Needed
These are the materials and supplies you will need for this fun craft project. Note that depending on whether you are using felt or paper, the adhesive will most likely be different. With paper, hot glue is not necessary and kids can use glue sticks or glue sponges.
- Felt (Brown, White, Pink (if desired for cheeks), Black (if not using google eyes)
- Black Permanent Marker
- Hot Glue and Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Groundhog Pattern (FREE to download below)
Directions To Make Felt Groundhog Kid Craft
This tutorial is using felt. Note that if you choose to use paper, glue sticks are preferred for kids.
Step One
Use the free pattern below to cut out the pieces of the groundhog. While this one is cut from browns, be prepared for creativity and the possibility that a groundhog craft could be any color at all. For cutting felt from patterns, I like to staple the pattern to the felt to hold it in place.
Once all of the pieces are cut out, it is time for step 2. If you adding pink cheeks, cut two small circles. If you are using google eyes, skip cutting out the eyes.
Step 2
To make the face on the groundhog, place the pieces then adjust them a little to draw the black line for the mouth.
Once the line is drawn, use hot glue to secure the cut out pieces.
Step Three
To put the rest of the groundhog together, use hot glue. The arms could be added down the the groundhog sides or straight out. There is a little wiggle room here for some creative freedom. It is best to add the arms and legs from the back so the attached glue part won’t be seen in the final groundhog decor.
Step Four
Decide how you plan to use your groundhog. If you want to add him to a plant like the first photo in this post, glue a long straw or stick to the center.
If you plan to add him to a garland, a sun and cloud make nice friends.
