So Many Fun Crafts and Printables for the Kentucky Derby

I am a Kentucky girl so thought I would design some fun things to share. It is such a fun time across the entire state filled with excitement, anticipation and so many festivities. I mean, truth be told, you don’t even have to know anything about the horses or the races to have a blast with the Derby parties and events.

Mint Julep Mocktail

This recipe makes 6 mint julep mocktails that are great for kids! They are a little bitter with the Ginger Beer but substituting Ginger Ale is an option. It is one of my favorite Kentucky Derby Kid Activities.

Ingredients

  • Mint leaves
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 2 Cups Water
  • Fresh Juice from 3 or 4 Large Lemons
  • 4 Cups Sprite or 7 Up
  • 2 Cups Ginger Beer

Mocktail Mint Julep Directions

Dissolve sugar in heated water and add lemon juice. Let it cool then add other liquids.  Serve over ice with mint leaves as a garnish. Sugar the rim of the glasses for extra sweetness. I remember growing up and having these as a special treat on Derby Day!

Make Felt Roses

The Derby is called RUN FOR THE ROSES and the winning horse is draped in a garland of them. Check out this great video about the roses!

Make your own roses from felt or paper. Here is a great little tutorial for you to try it out.

  1. Cut out 6 two inch circles from felt.
  2. Cut the circles in half.
  3. Glue the circles together, overlapping a little with each one as you go, using Fabri-Tac.
  4. Wrap the long strand you have glued together, gluing at the bottom as you go to keep tight.
  5. Let dry and glue to surface or add a stem.

Best Ways to Use Free Printables

You might have seen this list from me before but I think it is worth sharing over and over. Sometimes the people in the back need to hear things a few times, right?  There are so many great ways to use free printables.  Here are some of my favorites.

  • Print them and mail in an envelope with a stamp. Snail mail rocks.
  • Batch some up to make an activity book.  This is great for a road trip!
  • Print and use at a place setting on the table to create a conversation starter.
  • Add them to goody bags.  By the way, goody bags are not just for birthday parties.
  • Package them up with your favorite markers and crayons to give as a gift.
  • Drop a few off at the local coffee shop with fun pencils to spread some happy.
  • Cut them up to make cards, gift wrap and decorations.
