Make Your Own Water Bottle Dog Toy

Create an amazing interactive dog toy to use with a water bottle for fun play.

Our pets love to get gifts, especially toys and treats.  You can make your own water bottle toy with Kunin Felt and a sewing machine.  The only other supply you need is an empty plastic bottle. May dogs love the sound of the bottle crunch when playing with they toy and others like the texture of the felt. The loops on on the ends are great for a little tugging game too which makes this a multi-functioning toy. They could be made with smaller bottles for tiny furry friends or even two liter bottles if you have a giant sized pup. Dogs love this water bottle dog toy.

This water bottle dog toy is a great project for beginning on the sewing machine!  I love it because it doesn’t take very long so lots of water bottle toy treats can be made in one project sitting.  Easy sew pet projects are the best!

Materials and Supplied Needed

There are lots and lots of ways that this could be made. Felt is my favorite but could easily be substituted with recycled clothing (jeans are awesome) or fabric from your stash. Sewing pieces and scraps together to get a larger enough piece for the project would be a great use of those things that you are saving and hoping to find a fun purpose for. It might even be fun to incorporate old dog bandanas and broken leashes or collars.

To create a bottle dog toy you will need the following supplies and tools.

  • Kunin Felt in a Variety of Colors (Rainbow If You Want to Make a Rainbow and White for Clouds)
  • Rotary Cutter and Cutting Pad
  • Sewing Machine
  • Water Bottle

My Favorite Sewing Supply List

These are the sewing supplies that I keep on hand at all times. They get used over and over again and again in so many of my projects.

Directions to Make a Homemade Water Bottle Dog Toy

Step One

Cut 7 felt pieces that measure 2 x 12 inches for the body of your dog toy. Cut a dozen 3/4 x 12 inch strips for the fringe of your easy sew dog toy.

Step Two

Sew the seven wide strips together so that the seams are all on the inside.

Step Three

Pin the thin strips into loops along the tow ends of your sewn together strips. These will be so fun for your dogs to play with.

Step Four

Sew the loops into place with a straight stitch.

Step Five

Fold your dog toy in half so the seams are showing and sew it into a tube then flip it right side out. YAY for this adorable Water Bottle Dog Toy!

Step Six

Insert the water bottle (empty with NO lid)! The lid could cause a dog to choke. Note that when the bottle gets too smashed up from play, it is easy to take it out, wash the cover, and add a new water bottle. If you have a squeaky toy, you could try it inside the cover too.

Step Seven

Cut two felt strips to tie the ends closed.

 This puppy sure loves it.
