Polymer Clay Christmas Garland

Use Original Sculpey Clay to create a Christmas or seasonal garland in any shape.

Sculpey Original Clay is great because not only is it super easy to work with but it works great once baked and cooled for painting. Because it bakes in about fifteen minutes and cools rather quickly, this is a project that can be done in one sitting so works well with groups including kids.

Materials and Supplies Needed

  • Sculpey Original Clay
  • Silicone Mat
  • Baking Sheet
  • Oven
  • Clay Tools (Roller and Hole Maker)
  • Green Acrylic Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Twine

Directions to Make Clay Christmas Garland

This project can be done as a mini garland or a larger one. If you are planning to make a garland with cutouts that are larger than 2 inches, they should be thinner than this tutorial to keep them from getting too heavy.

Step One

Using a couple of bars of white Original Sculpey, roll the clay in your hands to soften and form a ball.

Place the ball on the silicone mat and roll into a flat piece about 1/4 inch thick. These will be chunky trees for a smaller garland.

Step Two

Use mini cutters to create the clay shapes. Cut out as many as you need to make the length of garland that you are going to need. For this, I cut extras to use as extra tie-ons for gifts. There are so many ways to use little clay pieces.

Step Three

Use a clay tool with a pointed end to put holes in the tops of all of the trees. Be aware that the holes are going to need to be wide enough for whatever twine is going to be used to feed through once the baking is complete.

Step Four

Bake at 275 degrees on the silicone mat (placed on a baking sheet) for 15 minutes then let cool completely before painting.

Oven-Hardening Clay Baking Tips

Follow these baking tips for best results:

  • Always preheat the oven before baking the project.
  • Only use a conventional oven or toaster oven, never a microwave.
  • Baking should be completed by adults in a well-ventilated area.
  • Always bake at the recommended temperature and baking time.
  • Raw clay should not touch any surfaces also used for food purposes.

Once the trees are cool, paint them with acrylic paints in whatever technique you enjoy. For these, I mixed a little green with white for the tops and brown with white on the trunks. Once the first side is dry, flip and paint the other sides too.

Step Five

Tie the trees together onto a long piece of twine. Feed the twine through each tree (one at a time), knotting as you go. This will keep the threes separated on the garland.
