Colorado Girl Scout Night at the Denver Zoo is one of our favorite Girl Scout events. This year BOTH of my girls have bridged up to Cadettes so we reached out and asked if we could volunteer to support that evening. I (along with my entire troop) am super excited to be able to have this opportunity to not only support the Colorado Girl Scouts and the Denver Zoo but also to support Washed Ashore. On the night of the event, Girl Scouts (and Boy Scouts) attending are encouraged to bring creations of their own using recycled things. They will be displayed in a “gallery” and voted on. The winning scout will receive a sleepover at the zoo for their troop. WHAT A GREAT PRIZE!
The Washed Ashore exhibit is on location at the Denver Zoo from September 24th through January 17, 2017. The first AMAZING masterpiece in on display and I got to see it last week. It is stunning and made from a bazillion recycled materials. To find out about this program and its mission to save the creatures of the sea, you can visit their website HERE. I borrowed this picture from the Denver Zoo website.
To prepare for our evening of volunteering, I had the Girl Scouts in my troop create their own art pieces using recycled items. Here they are at work. They definitely have a new respect for the difficulty of creating sculptures after this evening of artistic creating.
Their work is spectacular. I love this robot on a hover board.
This darling sea horse was made with an old key for a base.
The seal started out as a cardboard canister and foil leftover from camping. His tail was created with two jar lids and cupcake liners. He is embellished with game pieces and buttons and random things.
This darling bug is made up of game pieces from games that were missing what is needed to play. The base of the body pieces is Styrofoam discs recycled from a trade show display.
Cheers to Three of my Favorite Things…Girl Scouts, the Denver Zoo and Making Things,
Laura
