This is quite possibly the BEST buttercream icing ever in the history of forever.
We use this icing recipe to add a delicious touch of beautiful sweetness to so many sweet treats. It works great on cookies, cupcakes, cakes and even in macaroons. With a tad bit of coloring, it can be used to add pops of color to desserts too. The flavoring can even be changed to fit the needs of different recipes.
Using canned frosting from the store is the quickest way I know to ruin what could be an awesome dessert. This recipe is quick to make and totally worth the extra step in creating something homemade and perfect.
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Softened Butter
- 1 Cup Shortening
- 2 TSP Vanilla
- 1 TSP Almond Extract
- 4 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 2-6 TBSP Heavy Whipping Cream
Directions:
- Cream the butter and shortening together in a mixing bowl then add the flavorings (vanilla and almond).
- Slowly add the powdered sugar until thoroughly mixed in.
- Add heavy whipping cream until desired consistency. For things like macaroon filling, it is better to be thicker.
Using the Homemade Buttercream Icing
The icing can be spread onto a sweet treat with spatula or knife. However, I love the plastic baggy hack for making it pretty.
Spoon the frosting into a large plastic bag, avoiding one of the bottom corners.
Cut a small hole in the corner. The size of the hole will determine how much frosting comes out when the bag is squeezed.
Squeeze the bag to release the frosting onto your baked goodies.
Of course, I always recommend adding sprinkles! There is no such thing as too many sprinkles.
Add a fun cake topper with vinyl stickers! There are tons to choose from on Shop Laura Kelly.
Desserts with Buttercream Frosting

Everyone loves a giant cupcake, right? This unicorn cupcake is filled with sprinkles. The buttercream frosting recipe is perfect for this too!
