This is the most festive version of a caprese salad! Learn how to make your own mozzarella shapes with a silicone mold.

I have SO much basil left in my garden, still growing into November. I am super excited to share this simple way to shape your mozzarella balls into Christmas shapes, making your salad over the top festive and delightful. Of course, it is delicious too. Let’s make it, but first a FUN FACT. The word mozzarella comes from the dialect spoken in southern Italy for the word mozza, “cut” or meaning “to cut off”, referring to the technique that is used to make this cheese.

Ingredients

Directions to Make Christmas Caprese Salad

Start by creating the mozzarella shapes using a silicone mold. Fill the cavities up with balls then microwave for 20 seconds to melt. Dab off any extra water with a paper towel. If necessary, add extra balls and microwave again to fill cavities. Refrigerate to harden.

Next, wash and cut the cherry tomatoes into halves. If you don’t have cherry tomatoes, any tomatoes could be used and cut into small pieces.

Chop fresh basil into small pieces.

Mix tomatoes, extra cheese balls and basil and place on a dish.

Remove hardened mozzarella shapes from the fridge and place on the salad.

Serve immediately.
