Recycled Jean Bag with Simple Embroidery Designs for Kids

Do you ever have a pair of jeans wear out to the point that they are no longer part of the wardrobe but you can’t bear to throw them away? Cut them apart and upcycle them into awesome apparel. This gives them a new life and keeps them in your closet. Embroidery is such a fun way to express yourself and it goes great with this upcycle. I love this for kids because it is easy. I even created 12 designs that are simple for kids to complete. Let’s create a recycled jean bag with these simple embroidery designs for kids.

My Favorite Sewing Supply List

These are the sewing supplies that I keep on hand at all times. They get used over and over again and again in so many of my projects.

Directions for Making Bag

Start buy cutting the leg off of a pair of jeans between 12 and 20 inches in length. This will determine how deep your bag is and how much stuff it can hold.

Next, sew across the bottom of the leg using a zig-zag stitch several times. This will make your bag sturdy.

Cut a long piece of grosgrain ribbon for the handle. This should be measured to hang the length you like whether wearing your bag over the shoulder or crossbody style.

Fold the top of the jean bag down into the inside about 1/2 inch and pin, adding the ribbon in on either side.

This is your recycled jean bag!

Add a Simple Embroidery Designs for Kids Pocket

Stitch a simple design onto a separate piece of denim that is about 4 x 4 inches. If you plan to use this addition as a pocket and want it to fit a cell phone or sunglasses, make it taller to fit (like 6 or 7 inches). It is fun if it is from another pair of jean so is a slightly different shade. If it is easier for you, put the denim in a hoop first and then stitch. You can always cut the square or rectangle out afterwards.

Here are some fun ideas for stitching that are easy peasy for kids. You can draw them onto the jeans with a special chalk pencil that will wash out. Beginners and Kids might do better with the pattern drawn on before stitching. However, free stitching is really fun too. Simple embroidery designs for kids might be ones that they draw themselves too.

Once the design is stitched – decide if you want it to be a patch on the bag or a pocket.

If it is a patch, you are going to sew all the way around it to attach it. However, if you want a pocket, you are going to leave the top open. I stitched this one on as a patch.
