DIY Easy Sew Face Mask Pattern

You guys have been asking for the pattern that I am using to sew face masks so I am sharing it with step photos here. I love this pattern because it is literally SO EASY. One of the great things about it is that the whole family can jump in and help. Cutting fabric into rectangles isn’t too hard and neither is measuring elastic and cutting it. That creates two great jobs for your helpers.

Materials Needed to make a DIY Easy Sew Face Mask

To make each mask you will need the following materials and supplies:

2 Fabric Rectangles (9 x 7 inches each) – You can use more if you want more layers.
2 Pieces of Fabric for Ties (36 x 1 inch)

2 Pieces of Elastic (6.5 inches each in length)
Straight Pins
Scissors
Sewing Machine

I used oly*fun from Fairfield World in this tutorial. If you are wondering if Oly-fun is the same material that is used in hospital masks, the answer is… Sort-of. Oly-fun polypropylene non-woven material can be used for a variety of projects. As a non-woven it is similar to the material used in surgical masks, however, Oly*fun has not been tested or approved for medical use or filtration capabilities. Most commercially manufactured surgical masks are made of 3-ply 25GSM non-woven, whereas Oly*fun is 65GSM. Commercially made masks often include an additional filtration barrier.

Steps to make a DIY Easy Sew Face Mask

Start by cutting your two rectangles

Sew them together around the edge.

Fold three pleats in the mask and pin in place. Sew down the two sides to secure them in place.

Fold a long strip over the top of the mask (in the center) and pin it then sew it from one end to the other, stitching it to the mask through the center area. Do the same on the bottom of the mask.
