DIY Painted Christmas Gift Bag Kid Craft

Empower your kiddos to decorate their own holiday gift bags and personalize their giving.

This is a great project to do with a group of kids whether in the classroom, at home or in your store if you are store owner. It is also great for a Girl Scout meeting Christmas craft! I love that it is inexpensive and really allows for kids to access their creativity and use their imagination to express their hearts.

Materials and Supplies Needed

For Adding Gift Tags and Embellishments

  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch
  • Cardboard or Chipboard
  • Ribbon
  • Google Eyes or Buttons

Directions

This is truly a very simple craft project. The paint sticks are quick to dry so there is no mess to clean up or prep for. Follow these steps for a successful crafting experience. NOTE that the paint dries really quickly which is the BEST. This paint stripe will be dry by the time the lid is put back on and another color is opened.

  1. Create a work station by either using a table that can get messy or covering with a tablecloth or brown kraft paper.
  2. Give each kid ONE bag at a time to paint. This will keep things running smooth.
  3. Show a couple of ideas to get the kids thinking.
  4. Place the Kwik Stix paint sticks out around the table and let the kids paint to their hearts’ desires.

How to Make a Gift Tag with Kwik Stix and Chipboard

Start by using the Kwik Stix to paint a Christmas icon. A reindeer is a really easy one but other ideas might be a snowman, santa hat or candy cane.

Cut the icon out with scissors.

Punch a hole and add to a gift.

How To Involve Kids in DIY Projects

Do It Yourself projects are a great way to get the kids involved in making decorations. This gives them the opportunity to participate in what their environment looks and feels like – whether at home, school or camp. When kids have been included in the ideas and the creating, they have a sense of inclusion and importance, It is a way to have them learn that their vote counts.

If you are not aligned with your kid’s ideas for decorations because it’s not your look or style, don’t dismiss them. A good way to empower them to continue to express themselves is to allow them to have a large say in how they decorate their own space (bedroom or homework station). If you want to raise your kids to successfully be able to have a style of their own, it starts by giving them a say when they are little.
