Supplies Needed for an Embroidery Hoop Dream Catcher
There are not many supplies needed for this project which is awesome. Here is the list.
- Hemp Cord in a Variety of Colors from Hemptique (This one is for patriotic decorating.)
- Embroidery Hoop
- Scissors
Additional Embellishments
- Polymer Clay Flowers made with Sculpey III
- Painted Wooden Beads with DecoArt Acrylic Paint
Directions
Start by choosing colors for the wrapped edge of the dream catcher, three or four is plenty. Pull them all together and cut a really long piece (like 10 feet) and tie to the hoop.
Wrap around the hand to make it easier to create a bundle for wrapping the hoop.
Wrap and wrap and wrap and then if the cord runs out, tie a new bunch of hemp cord to the starting pieces and keep going.
Tie off at the end. It is good to end at the metal hook because it is easier to tie off there. Add hemp cord dangles to the bottom by tying knots or using a loop. Beads are fun. Paint wooden ones to match. Here is my pro tip for painting beads. Thread them on a piece of twine then tie to the handles of two coffee mugs. Paint them and let them dry while they hang in mid air.
Next, tie the beads to the dangles.
Lastly, wrap hemp cord around the circle to create the web that catches the dreams!
Adding Polymer Clay Flowers
A beautiful way to embellish the dream catcher is to add polymer clay flowers. All of the details for making these with Sculpey III are here on the blog with easy directions.
What is a Dream Catcher?
A dream catcher is a handmade net tied in the middle of a circle (representing the Earth). The legend goes that bad dreams are caught in the net at night while one is sleeping and released back out into the world while that sleeper is awake. There are lots of explanations for them, where they originated and how Native Americans have used them. I think it is definitely a fun and very interesting topic to research.
