This darling craft is perfect to create for kids working on scissor skills.
While this craft has a purpose in teaching the much needed skill of cutting with scissors, it also creates a darling piece of decor once completed. It can be done in a variety of colors and used to add an accent to a classroom or a homework station.
Materials and Supplies Needed
- Big Shot Switch Machine (Comes with Platform, Adapter Pad and Cutting Plates)
- Sizzix White Card Stock
- Sizzix Colored Card Stock
- Kwik Stix Paint Sticks or Crayons
- Round Framelet Die
- Glue or Adhesive
- Scissors or Paper Cutter to Make Strips
- Black Marker
Directions
This project can be done ahead of time and given to a child to practice using scissors OR done together, having them help make it from the start. Note that the Big Shot Switch is intended for adult use so those steps would not be for a kiddo. However, they do love to watch and learn!
Step One
Color and scribble with paint sticks all over two pieces of white card stock with the colors blue, white and gray. These will become the background of the cloud.
Step Two
Use the four largest sized circles in the Sizzix Framelit Circle Set of 8. Place them in the sandwich for cutting that is required for cutting Framelits (the platform and the adapter then the card stock then the dies SANDWICHED between the plates).
The BEST thing is that this is all in an easy to read diagram on the platform and the adapter!
Step Three
Run the sandwiched materials through the Big Shot Switch. It is so much fun to watch it go through and not have to turn the crank while holding things in place!
Step Four
Disassemble the sandwich and get all of the circle cut outs. Do this again with your other piece of painted card stock to get even MORE circles.
Step Five
Use an adhesive to attach the circle to each other forming a cloud shape then outline with a black marker. Mount the cloud on blue card stock and cut around outside leaving a border if you want your cloud to be sturdier. This is great if you plan to use the cloud multiple times – adding new cutting strips for more scissor skills practice. Laminating the cloud is another way to make it sturdy
Add a face with google eyes and a painted cheek smile if desired to add extra personality.
Step Six
Using the fun colored card stock, cut 1 1/2 x 11 inch strips.
Draw lines (straight, zig zag and squiggle on the strips.
Glue the strips to the cloud.
How to Use Completed Project to Teach Cutting Skills
Did you know…Scissor skills and cutting activities like this cloud with strips help develop fine motor skills, (specifically the muscle strength and dexterity) of a child. In addition to fine motor skills, cutting activities can also help develop bilateral coordination and even visual motor integration.
Cut on the lines.
Curl the paper by wrapping and rolling it on a marker or paint stick.
The final work of art is great to display or use over and over again adding new strips for cutting practice.
